The department of Language, Literature and Civilization of the Black Sea Countries is a Multidisplinary Department and admitted students for the first time in September of 2000. It was founded by the Presidential Decree 90/2000 within the program framework for expansion of the Higher Education domain carried out by the Ministry of Education with funding provided by the E.U.
The Department’s mission is to promote, cultivate and diffuse, through teaching and research of the language, the linguistics, literature, and civilization of the peoples of the greater Black Sea area, particularly those of a Hellenic origin; to educate scientists in the study, research and comprehension of these languages, the literature and civilization of the peoples in the said region, such as Greeks, Russians, Turks, and others. Graduates can be employed in Greek Government Offices, Consulates or private businesses in the Black Sea countries (Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey), or, as educators within Greece, official translation agencies, or specialists in research foundations.
The department is hosted in the original building of the Department of Law Studies (Building B’) and, together with the other six departments established in the recent expansion of the University, it belongs to its newest additions.
The University Council of Demokritus University of Thrace , in the 563/30-10-2001 assembly, approved the establishment of the following departmental divisions according with the 8/1-10-2001 proposal by the departmental council.
DIVISION OF LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
It coordinates subjects required for training scientists in language, linguistics, and literary aspects of the Black Sea peoples.
Thus, it addresses (a) languages of Black Sea as well as Western origin, (b) The linguistic subjects that include courses that refer to translation and interpretation apart from relevant theoretical aspects, (c) teaching of Black Sea Languages, and (d) Literature and literary heritage of the Black Sea peoples.
DIVISION OF HISTORY AND CIVILIZATION
It coordinates subjects required for training scientists in history and civilization of the Black-Sea peoples.
Thus, it addresses the subjects of (a) History (general review of specific chronological periods, archaeology, for each of the nations of the Black Sea countries), (b) Civilization (religious aspects, folklore, social structure, environment, aesthetics, regional architecture, national music).
DIVISION OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
It coordinates subjects required for training in Sociology, Economy and Public and International Relations in the Black Sea Region.
Thus, it covers the subject areas of (a) Sociology (introduction in Sociology, Current trends in social theory, history and evolution of social theories, (b) The Law (national and international law, commerce in the Black sea region and related legal structure, civic law, etc.) (g) Economy (Organization and management, elements of political economy, the presence of Black-sea countries in the world financial structure), economic dynamics of the region, E.C.B.S. (Economic Cooperation of the Black Sea Region) and (d) National and International relations in the Black Sea, Hellenic Foreign Policies, etc.
